TREATMENT FOR DOGS WITH HIP DYSPLASIA- UNDERSTANDING HIP DYSPLASIA

Dog Hip dysplasia is a hereditary problem that seems to appear between the ages of 4 and 12 months.

Larger breed of dogs have a higher risk of hip dysplasia in the developing stage because they carry a greater weight in the joints as in breeds such as Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Dalmatian dogs, but it’s important to realize that small dogs can be affected also.

Canine hip dysplasia affects the ball and socket joint of the hip, the head of the large bone of the dog’s leg does not fit properly in the socket, the socket itself is not well developed, and it creates a lot of stress on the joint.

Dog hip dysplasia ranges from mild to moderate; In mild cases, the space between the joints is larger than normal.

Fortunately, in mild cases, there are no associated arthritic changes in the joint., the head of the bone that is normally rounded begins to flatten.

Unfortunately, once arthritis appears in the joint, the condition is irreversible,

Treatment for dog hip dysplasia can vary, from anti-inflammatory drugs to supplements such as Chondroitin and Glucosamine have been proved to be very effective, to a total hip replacement surgery .

In severe cases such as this, the hip bone is completely out of line. however, not all dogs with hip dysplasia and arthritis will become lame.

Some are lame as puppies, some may never be lame.

Symptoms of hip dysplasia include:

* pain in the hip

* bunny hopping when running

* a swaying gait

* difficulty in the back legs when getting up

* when the puppy is lying on its back, its back legs may not extend towards the front legs without pain

* walking with a limp

The only way to find out if your dog definitely has hip dysplasia is if he has an x-ray by a vet.

This will usually be accomplish by sedating the dog heavily, or go under anesthesia.

Tips To Prevent Canine Hip Dysplasia

* Don’t feed a growing dog with high calorie diet

It is important that the dog’s nutritional needs are met, but obesity and rapid weight gain, which bear more of a burden on the joints.

* Make sure you get to growing dogs the type of exercise they need.

If a dog is genetically predisposed to hip dysplasia, this can delay the beginning of symptoms, or reduce the chance of it developing into a more severe form.

Jumping up and down from heights, and standing on their back legs, such as when they stand against a fence or window to look over it, can aggravate the joints whilst they are growing quickly.

Buy dogs from a reputable breeder.

If one parent dog has hip dysplasia, the risk of it occurring is doubled.

Good breeders make sure to avoid that situation.

The pedigrees of dogs can be checked to see whether they have been certified as normal by the Orthopedic Foundation For Animals (OFA) in the US. and other organizations that monitor indicators of normality are hip in dogs Penn Hip and the GDC (Genetic Disease Control in Animals).

Since large breed dogs have a greater chance of developing hip dysplasia, the prospective owners would be wise to take this precaution.
