Treating Pet Arthritis

Animals cannot verbalize when they are in pain, but they do provide us with subtle clues as to when something is wrong.

Today’s video discusses pet arthritis and how to treat it. Did you know the number one reason of arthritis in pets is obesity?

Some signs in dogs that they may be suffering from arthritis are:
* Not wanting to walk
* Less playful than usual
* Not keen to walk upstairs

Some signs in cats are:
* They stop grooming themselves because they can’t reach around
* They don’t go to the litterbox
* They don’t climb up on their perches anymore

Usually arthritis is seen between 6-7 years of age, although in larger dogs such as Great Danes it may be seen between 4-5 years.

Treatment options include the following:
* Keep your pets at their ideal body weight
* A new form of laser therapy using the Companion Therapy Laser where the wand is rubbed over the joints to reduce pain and inflammation
* Vet stem cell therapy
* NSAID’s such as Rimadyl or Deramaxx which is given as a daily chewable tablet
* Adequan Canine
* Supplements such as Cosequin chewables
* Prescription diets such as J/D

Your veterinarian will discuss with you the best treatment options available for your pet and may utilize a combination of the above for optimal results.
